Odd-size vs custom-cut mattresses: how to order the right fit

A listed rectangular size is a different purchase from a one-off shape. Knowing which you need makes shopping simpler.

Start with established dimensions

Three-quarter, Olympic queen, short queen, RV king, and several truck sleeper formats are sold as listed size options by specialist brands. You may be able to choose one directly without requesting a custom design.

When a custom order makes sense

Cut corners, unusual curves, a tapered platform, or dimensions absent from the standard selector may need a custom quote. Draw the shape clearly and ask the seller how they want measurements supplied. Do not assume a custom build includes a home trial.

Get the specifications in writing

Confirm the drawing orientation, dimensions, tolerance, height, cover, firmness, foundation, production timing, and return policy before production begins. If storage hinges underneath, ask specifically about folding or flexing the selected construction.

Keep a practical comparison

Compare a custom quote against any listed size only when the seller confirms it is suitable for your bed. A smaller rectangular mattress may be cheaper but leave an unsafe or inconvenient gap, particularly on bunks. The bed maker’s requirements come first.
