Low profile bed frames

Low-profile and floor beds sit 8 inches off the floor or less. They give a lower, modern look and keep a thick mattress from ending up too high to sit on.

Below: the frames independent reviewers actually tested and rated well for this, with what they found, videos and owner reports, then all 41 frames.

How we check: Listed when the seller’s stated height is 8″ or less.

Low-profile frames independent testers rated well

Frames that reviewers who actually used them rated well for this. Ordered by how much independent evidence there is, not by commission. Mattress Clarity and Sleepopolis share a test team, so the same finding on both counts as one opinion.

The Frame Brooklyn Bedding

Best Budget Bed Frame · Mattress Clarity Best Budget Bed Frame · Sleepopolis

How low it sits: A steel frame whose pieces click together without tools to hold a foundation or box spring; the maker says it was tested to more than 2,500 lbs.

  • Rated well Sleepopolis: Reviewer personally tested it: about 7.5 inches tall, sits fairly low to the floor with only a little room underneath, and is very sturdy. It needs a box spring or foundation, which sets your final bed height.
  • Rated well Mattress Clarity: Assembled in about five minutes. When testers shook it and moved it around the studio it made no noise, and the metal did not clang or shift. It still needs a foundation or box spring on top.
  • Rated well Sleepopolis: Got a perfect assembly score and 4/5 for materials and experience. It stayed quiet, with no weak points found, when moved from room to room. Needs a box spring.

Owners on height and support: Owners on the maker's page call it sturdy, easy to set up and relatively low profile; one owner of about 260 lbs said it holds up well. Complaints include a twin frame that cracked at the legs after two years, a missing middle strut, and frames that arrived broken. (source)

The Floyd Bed - Original Floyd

How low it sits: Birch plywood panels with a honeycomb core rest on bent steel supports and are pulled tight by nylon ratchet straps, so the platform stays 7.5 inches high overall.

  • Rated well Domino: The editor slept on it for five years. It's 7.5 inches tall with about 6 inches of clearance. With a 14.5-inch mattress stack it felt the right height. The straps stayed tight with no real movement, but the headboard creaks a little.
  • Rated well InsideHook: The writer built the Full/Queen alone with no tools and called the result sturdy and durable. She says with a second person it would take under half an hour. Add the underbed storage before tightening the platform.

What reviewers say to look for

  • Mattress Clarity advises against platform slats more than about 5 inches apart. With wider gaps, add a bunkie board for support. (Mattress Clarity)
  • A bunkie board gives a mattress about the same support as a box spring without the extra height, which suits low beds and platforms with widely spaced slats. (Mattress Nerd)
  • Platform frames usually sit lower and can be harder to get in and out of. A box spring adds height for people who struggle with that. (Good Housekeeping)
  • Final bed height is frame plus mattress. The long-term reviewer found a 7.5-inch frame topped by a 14.5-inch mattress and cooling pad the right height. (Domino)
