Bed frames that work with an adjustable base

These bed frames can hold an adjustable base (including Sleep Number’s), usually by taking out the slats so the base sits inside the frame. Keep the look of a regular bed while the base lifts your head and feet.

Below: the frames independent reviewers actually tested and rated well for this, with what they found, videos and owner reports, then all 70 frames.

How we check: Listed when the seller states the frame works with an adjustable base.

Frames tested with an adjustable base inside

Frames that reviewers who actually used them rated well for this. Ordered by how much independent evidence there is, not by commission. Mattress Clarity and Sleepopolis share a test team, so the same finding on both counts as one opinion.

1

Box Tufted Buttonless Upholstered Bed Sleep Number

How a base fits: The Lifestyle frame has no support of its own; Sleep Number says a base is required, either its integrated base and legs or a FlexFit adjustable base, sold separately.

  • Fits a base Mattress Clarity: Reviewer set up the box-tufted frame. It has no slats or center base, so you buy a platform or adjustable base separately. It was tested with a standard mattress, not a base. It sits low with no storage, and the headboard hooks were fiddly.

What reviewers say to look for

  • Saatva's adjustable bases fit all its bed frames except the Sydney and every storage bed; its storage beds won't work because of the hydraulic lift platform. (Saatva)
  • Zero-clearance bases such as Saatva's are slim enough to sit inside another frame, and their legs can come off when the base goes on a platform. (Sleepopolis)
  • DreamCloud's Classic base is zero-clearance, so it can go inside most standard or decorative frames. It ships with 8-inch legs plus 2- and 3-inch extenders for height. (Mattress Clarity)
  • The base's legs must fit inside the frame you already have, so a platform frame with only a few slats is the easiest home for an adjustable base. (Mattress Nerd)
  • Most adjustable bases match standard mattress sizes and can go in a regular frame, but some brands differ slightly, so measure the base and the inside of the frame first. (Mattress Nerd)
  • Even when a base can sit inside a frame, attaching a headboard may need a separate bracket from the base maker. (Mattress Clarity)

What to know

An adjustable base needs room to lift and its own legs on the floor. Frames that work with one usually let you remove the slats so the base sits inside.

What to check

  • Inside dimensions vs. the base
  • Rail height vs. the base’s height
  • Headboard brackets for your base
  • Whether the base’s legs reach the floor

What we see when frames fail

From Tim Sumerfield’s recycling work: the frames that come out with the mattresses show where cheap construction gives way.

    Questions

Can I put an adjustable base in a regular bed frame?

Only if the frame has an open center (removable slats) big enough for the base, and the base’s legs can reach the floor. Check the seller’s compatibility note.
