You need one that can bend. Most foam, latex and many hybrid mattresses work; check that the mattress maker says it’s adjustable-base compatible. Traditional innerspring mattresses with a rigid border usually don’t.
Sometimes. The base needs an open space at least as big as its outside size, and its legs or the frame must hold it at the right height. Some bases are made to sit inside a frame.
